About me and why I made this website.
Hi there! I'm Phoebe. My pronouns are she/her. You may also know me by my definitely-not-a-fursona Funk Junkins the funky poodle. I've toyed with making a website off and on for most of my life, but this is the first time I've gotten far enough to publish anything. This is a personal website, so you'll find an eclectic mix of topics that are important to me including: computers and electronics, games, cars, chemistry, and transsexuality. In addition, you'll find some web toys and interactive pieces made using a mix of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
The web toys are what pushed me to make my own website rather than a blog or newsletter or something. Sure, Substack or Medium would allow me to publish text and pictures in a convenient WYSIWYG editor, but they don't let me program a game or a calculator. These platforms also don't give enough control over the design and layout to the author. Sure, Geocities was full of unreadable headache-inducing saturated colors, but they were made by real humans who were passionate about graphic design, dammit!
Lately I've also had something of a fixation on hypertext fiction. Kentucky Route Zero is an incredible example and I strongly recommend playing it, but you may have also heard of 17776 or Depression Quest. Put simply, there are some stories that cannot be told via a print or static digital medium. A choose-your-own adventure novel is the closest you can get on paper.
This website is also partly a means for me to explore what exactly about tech and the Internet in the '90s and 2000s is worth being nostalgic for. I think a lot of nostalgia is misplaced because, let's be honest, a lot of it sucked, but there were aspects of it that have been lost. What does a personal website do differently than a social media page? What does hand-written HTML offer that a content management system can't?
If you have any feedback or questions, my Bluesky is linked below and my DMs are open. I may include an email address on this page in the future, but I honestly have no idea if anybody uses email like that anymore. Thanks for stopping by!
